Steel, chrome, metal, and now blue steel! Steel work can become dull and boring if you only use the basic steel colors. By making your own colors and gradients, you can turn a simple and dull piece of gray/white/black steel into awesome blue colored steel (or any other color for that matter).

In this tutorial, we will show you how to choose the colors to create an instant, temporary, gradient to give the illusion of a blue steel color. When you want to create a certain gradient, all you do it click on the foreground color and select your color and then so the same for the background color. After selecting your colors, go to the materials palette and click on the gradient tab.

You will see a little square with the gradient you selected, usually in the upper left hand corner, (the first little square). You can preview the gradient by filling any kind of selection or applying it to an entire new layer to see if it is the look you were after. If you like it, the gradient will stay there as long as you have it in the history, or you can create and save a custom gradient….but that is a whole other tutorial.

Step 1

Start by creating a new image 300 X 300 with a white background.

Layers > New Raster Layer... > Ok

Selection Tool (S) and Selection type: Rectangle

Draw a rectangular selection in the middle of the image:

Selections > Load/Save Selection > Save Selection To Alpha Channel... > Save

On the Materials palette, set your Foreground color to #5B7995 and your Background color to #1C3752.

On the Materials palette, click on the Foreground color and select the Gradient tab. Click on the image to open the available gradients. Select Foreground-background and use the following settings:

Use the Flood Fill Tool (F) and fill the selection:

Selections > Select None

Step 2

Layers > New Raster Layer... > Ok

Selection Tool (S) and Selection type: Rectangle

Draw a rectangular selection on the left side of the image:

Selections > Load/Save Selection > Save Selection To Alpha Channel... > Save

Use the Flood Fill Tool (F) and fill the selection:

Selections > Select None

Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast... > Brightness: 43 Contrast: 15 > Ok

Select the Raster Deform Tool (D). You should now see that our image has several small square points around it. These are called nodes. While holding down the CTRL key on your keyboard, grab the upper left node and bring it down slightly:

Step 3

Layers > Duplicate

Image > Mirror

Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast... > Brightness: 43 Contrast: 15 > Ok

If you need to, use the Move Tool (M) and line up the image correctly on the right edge

Congratulations, now use a little imagination and see what you can create with your new image.
