Step 1

Start by creating a new image 300 X 300 with a white background.

On the Tools toolbar, select the Pen Tool (V)

On the Tool Options palette, click on the Line Style drop-list, and click Round.

NOTE: If you do not have "round" in your drop down list as a selection, you may create it as a custom line by following the steps outlined in Step 1 of our Signature Plates tutorial.

Mode: Draw Lines and Polylines, Connect Segments and Show Nodes should be checked. Set the width to 75:

Now we need to select (or create) a gradient with two colors. Set the light color on top (Foreground color) and the dark color on the bottom (Background color).

I've chosen to create my own gradient.

On the Materials palette, set your Foreground color to #8cefea and your Background color to #086461

On the Materials palette, click on the Foreground color and select the Gradient tab. Click on the image to open the available gradients. Select Foreground-background and use the following settings:

Starting from one side of our canvas, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard (this will help keep a straight line) and draw a line:

Layers > Convert to Raster Layer

On the Materials palette, click on the Foreground color (the Gradient tab should still be selected). Remove the checkmark from the Invert box:

Change the Line Style Width to 65:

Again, starting from one side of our new image, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and draw a smaller line:

If for any reason it's not what you want for length, or, you need to move it left/right up/down a bit move your mouse towards the line in the middle until you see your mouse cursor change to something similar to this:

This will allow you to move the image without changing the length. If you need to change the length, move your mouse towards one of the small square boxes (called nodes) and resize your image:

Layers > Convert to Raster Layer

Layers > Duplicate

On the Tools toolbar, Select the Move Tool (M) and move your duplicate image to the opposite side:

Step 2

Depending on your comfort level, you could switch back to the Pen Tool (V) and reduce the Line Style Width to 55, or for speed try the following.

Layers > Duplicate

Image > Flip

On the Tools toolbar, select the Pick Tool (K) your image will now look similar to this:

Keep manipulating the image by resizing the shape using the nodes until you get the look your after:

For my image, I've chosen to keep it lined up more along the top:

This will allow me to add a drop shadow.

Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow... I'm using the following settings:

I want my button to stand out more from the rest of my pill shape, So I've chosen to darken it.

Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast... > Brightness: -43 Contrast: 15 > Ok

At this point you've got lots of options. I'll quickly show you a few examples. You could duplicate the layer and move it over to the opposite side:

Add Text:

Add a gloss effect to the top and bottom of our image similar to Step 5 of our Glossy Pill Buttons tutorial:

Add a drop shadow to the entire image:

As a final example, add two 1 pixel separator lines between the two buttons:

Enjoy!
