Step 1

Start by creating a new image 300 X 300 with a white background.

On the Tools toolbar, select the Pen Tool (V)

On the Tool Options palette, click on the Line Style drop-list, and click Round.

NOTE: If you do not have "round" in your drop down list as a selection, you may create it as a custom line by following the steps outlined in Step 1 of our Signature Plates tutorial.

Mode: Draw Lines and Polylines, Connect Segments and Show Nodes should be checked. Set the width to 75:

On the Materials palette, set your Foreground color to #545454

Starting from one side of our canvas, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard (this will help keep a straight line) and draw a line.

TIP: You can use your RIGHT and LEFT arrow keys on your keyboard to adjust the length:

Layers > Convert to Raster Layer

Selections > Select All [Keyboard shortcut: CTRL + A]

Selections > Float [Keyboard shortcut: CTRL + F]

Selections > Defloat [Keyboard shortcut: CTRL + Shift + F]

Selections > Load/Save Selection > Save Selection To Alpha Channel... > Save

Step 2

Now let's remove a portion to simulate that it is a clear glass style button.

Selections > Modify > Contract... > Number of pixels: 8 > Okay.

It's a bit tricky here, but we're going to cut a small groove out of it to add to the appearance.

On the Tools toolbar, select the Selection (S) and on the Tool Options palette, Selection type: Rounded Rectangle

While holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, place your mouse about 1/3 down from the top of the selection and just on the inside of it and remove the upper half. The idea here is to leave a rounded cut out:

On the Tools toolbar, select the Move Tool (M)

When your dealing with Raster layers, as long as the Move Tool (M) is selected we can use the arrow keys on our keyboard to move our image in all four directions; up/down and left/right.

On your keyboard hit the UP arrow key 4 times:

Now, hit Delete on your keyboard:

Let's place it back where it originally was. Hit the Down arrow key on your keyboard 4 times.

Selections > Load/Save Selection > Load Selection From Alpha Channel... > Load.

Selections > Modify > Contract... > Number of pixels: 1 > Ok.

Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur > Radius: 4 > OK.

Selections > Modify > Expand... > Number of pixels: 1 > Ok.

Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow... I'm using the following settings:

Step 3

Now let's dress it up a bit with a glass style reflection along the top.

On the Tools toolbar, select the Pen Tool (V)

It should still be Round on the Line Style drop-list. Set the width to 15:

On the Materials palette, click on the Foreground color and select the Gradient tab. Click on the image to open the available gradients. Select Fading White and use the following settings:

Starting from one side of image, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and draw a line.TIP: you can use the UP/DOWN arrow keys on your keyboard to adjust the height.

Layers > Convert to Raster Layer

Now at first glance, it may not appear as much:

Change the background to something with contours:

Isn't that better? Have fun!
